New York Mets v New York Yankees, July 7, 2001Yankee Stadium, BLCH 39
This was a bring the boys event. It was only 80 degrees for this afternoon but I had a overheated kid on my hands. We were crammed in the bleachers.
A knucklehead seated behind us tapped one of my boys on the back and said; "Hey kid. You know what Mets stands for? Ah, no........ "My Entire Team Suck!" Ah, that's pretty funny guy. The kid is like 6.
The first place Yanks were facing Kevin Appier and the cross town Mets in another edition of the Subway Series. We were in the middle of the roll call guys in the bleachers. I heard the infamous roll call from afar many times. It was cool being in the middle of it.
How many of these have you been to? 0-0 after nine. There were only 10 hits in first 9 innings combined. Mussina struck out 10 in his strong 7 innings. Appier pitched 8 innings 8 K's himself.
There was a combined 4 batters walked.
A classic pitching battle. And you'd think once the Sandman entered, it was lights out.
But Mariano gave up 4 hits in the top of the 10th. With the Mets Desi Relaford and Edgado Alfonso on base, Mike Piazza singled to right scoring Relaford. Perez and Todd Zeile followed with consective hits scoring 2 more.
That was all the Mets needed as Armando Benitez came in the home 10th and shut the sides down.
A low key New York, New York echoed throughtout the cathedral as we exited.
