Chicago Blackhawks v Boston Bruins, March 7, 1992Boston Garden, Section 2 Row 7
We were in the Loge, only 7 rows from the ice. The Boston Garden was really the coolest sports venue I was ever in. The Garden had good Canadien beer for sale in the good seats. I couldn't help notice how narrow the seats were and how close your knees were to your chest when sitting. With all of the charm, it really was not an arena suited to carry a franchise into the 21st century.
During an intermission we went around to the mens room just before closed curtains. The curtains separated the fans in the concourse from the path the Bruins took to the locker room. The mens room had like 2 urinals for 14,000 fans.
After I went to the bathroom my buddy grabbed me by the shoulder and yelled "watch out for the Zamboni". What kind of thing is that to say to a guy walking in the concourse of an NHL game? It was a legit warning. The Zamboni was leaving the ice and pulling into a garage bay. And it had to drive right through the fans to get there. We then watched the Bruins leave the locker room to the ice only separated by a thick rubber curtain with an open mesh at the top.
This really was old school.
This was the first game of a home and home. The visiting Blackhawks ended up beating the Bruins 2-1.
The Blackhawks went on to the Stanley Cup Finals this season only to lose to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Chicago were loaded with talent with Jeremy Roenick, Steve Larmer, Michel Goulet, Chris Chelios, Eddie Belfour and a back up goalie named Dominic Hasek.
