Hampton was about 1 hour from campus. Back in those days an hour was on the other side of the world. So we got a hotel room.
A sold out crowd and I picked out the one guy in the stand who looked a lot like that guy on the NBA logo. Hall of Famer and Los Angeles Laker Jerry West was in the stands scouting someone. He was kind enough to pose for a picture and autograph my ticket stub.
After the game a buddy of mine snagged the Sun Belt Conference banner on the scorer's table and it ended up in my apartment for a number of years.
Final 87-82 and VCU wins an NCAA berth.
