The Rolling Stones, December 18, 1981Hampton Coliseum, General Admission
Festival seating was kind of outlawed in some jurisdictions around this time period as several people were stomped to death at a Who concert in Cincinnati a few months prior. It surprised us this show remained "general admission".
A friend's dad drove us to the show. We had a hotel room within walking distance. We arrived to the hotel in the early afternoon, checked in and wondered aimlessly over to the show. Dumb luck timing had us first in line just as the doors opened. Several people sprinted to the front of the stage. We wondered slowly and still ended up leaning on the front of the stage. The place slowly filled up.
The opening act was George Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers. I knew of his music as my older brother had albums and he was getting some air time on Philadelphia radio at the time.
He actually rocked the place and ended up putting on a better show then the Stones.
A long time passed between Thorogood's set and The Stones coming on stage. Several things happened during this time. The crowd began pressing us against the stage. We had no control of our bodies. We were picked up and moved in waves of movement. Somehow we worked our way several rows back from the stage.
The Stones came on stage, cameras on cranes swooped down from above us. The legendary Rolling Stones were within spitting distance from us. At one point a little Charles Manson looking guy came up behind me and told me to move. I told him I couldn't move. She leaned in and said "I have a knife and I need to get close to Mick". I found enough room to let him around.
