In the 83-84 season, both Richmond and VCU made it to the NCAA tournament. Usually it is big news when a major basketball city like Philadelphia sends 2 teams to the dance. This was incredible for mid major city like Richmond.
VCU won in the first round on a buzzer beater shot against Northeastern by Rolando Lamb. Richmond went on to upset Charles Barkley and Auburn in Round 1. During this time period, small Richmond upset some other NCAA favorites to earn the name "giant killers".
Richmond had future NBA star Johnny Newman on the roster.
