A David Cone for KC versus the O's Rick Sutcliffe matchup. Brian McRae singled to center to start off the game. After Sutcliffe retired the next two batters he gave up an RBI single to Felix Jose. The game remained scoreless until the top half of the 4th when the Royals Phil Hiatt doubled in both Jose and Chris Gwynn for a 3-0 lead.
Cone remained strong until the 5th. With Baltimore's Chris Hoiles on 3rd after leading off the inning with a double, David Segui hit a sac fly to left, scoring Hoiles. Tim Hulett, who moved Hoiles to 3rd initially, remained on 1st base. Brady Anderson and Mark McLemore both drove in runs in the 5th to tie the game.
The game remained tie until the bottom of the 9th. Harold Reynolds got a lead off single in the 9th. Brady Anderson got on when Reynolds was forced out at 2nd on an Anderson infield grounder. Cal Ripken was intentionally walked.
One the first pitch to Harold Reynolds, Reynolds drove the ball into left field scoring Anderson for the game winning run.
The Sunday afternoon game was attended by 43,888.
