Howard Stern Show Funeral for John DeBella, May 10, 1990

Judge Lewis Quadrangle, GA

Howard Stern's radio show from WXRK in New York began to simulcast in Philadelphia on 94 WYSP in 1985.  At the time 93.3 WMMR had the #1 morning radio show.  After years Stern pledged to Philadelphia if we made him #1 he would come down to the city to celebrate.

To inspire Philadelphia he concocted a "funeral" for morning rival John DeBella if he overtook the top spot.  Stern was relentless on the radio towards DeBella.  Finally he did it.  The "funeral" was set for a park across from Independence Hall.

We took off from work for the day and met at the high speed line to take the train into the city.  It was a rainy morning and it continued to rain during the event.  Dispute the weather, over 10,000 were there to celebrate.

Several personalities performed DeBella parody songs as did listeners who submitted parody songs.

After the show we went to walk up Market Street to go to a bar called McGlinchey's.  We walking into a Beatle-esque frenzy as Stern was trying to escape the crowd in his limo.  The crowd chased after the limo as it raced up Market Street to get away.
