Pat Burrell hit a home run in the bottom of the 1st to put the home team on the board early.
The score remained the same until the bottom of the 4th when Jason Werth doubled scoring Greg Dobbs.
The Padres Mike Cameron hit home run in the 6th with no on base. Padres reliever and VCU alum Cla Meredith came in to face the Phillies in the 7th. The Phils held a 2-1 lead at the time.
Tom Gordan came in to pitch the 8th inning, surrendering a game tying home run to Mike Cameron. Closer Brent Myers was called in the bottom of the 9th with the score tied 2-2. He quickly tossed a lead off beachball to Kevin Kouzmanoff who launched a homer to deep right, putting the Padres up 3-2. Shortly after pinch hitter Terrmel Sledge launched another home run to deep left center.
The Phils put up a fight in the bottom of the 9th when Ryan Howard knocked in Jimmy Rollins with a double but ultimatly the Fightins came up short.
After the game Myers was involved in an altercation with Philadelphia Inquirer beat writer Sam Carchidi. Comments made by both the player and the reporter sent Myers into a profanity-laced verbal tirade with Carchidi in which Myers called him a "retard"and threatened to knock him out, while other members of the Phillies and Philadelphia media tried to separate the two.
