Nomo-Mania

Los Angeles Dodgers v Philadelphia Phillies, August 25, 1995

Veterans Stadium, Sec 626 Row 2

After hundreds of games at The Vet I finally watched a ball travel an impressive distance. It all had to do with my location in the stadium. As I was on the 3rd base rail with my son attempting to get him an autograph, I saw Mike Piazza launch a rocket during batting practice into the upper deck in deep left field. It was the first time I have ever felt the power of a major league home run and actually appreciated how far that ball travels.

The Dodgers had an impressive streak of rookies of the year the last few seasons. We went to the game to see the newest Dodgers sensation Hideo Nomo pitch. He went against the #1 overall pick in the 1989 draft. Salem, MA native Jeff Juden.

The Phils got things started in the bottom of the 1st with a 2 run homer from underachiever Gregg Jefferies off Nomo. Jefferies was not done. In the 3rd he tripled off Nomo again knocking in 2 more runs. Darren Dalton knocked Jefferies in with a single. Then Kevin Stocker hit another triple off Nomo, scoring 2 more.

The Dodgers got back 2 in the 4th. Nomo only lasted 3 innings. He was replaced in the 4th with Dodgers releiver Jim Bruske. He uncorked a wild pitch allowing another Phils run to score.
And to help his own cause, Phils pitcher Jeff Juden hit a grand slam extending the lead to 14-2.

The Phils piled on 3 more to beat the 1st place Dodgers 17-4 in front of
33,230. Nomo was billed as the attraction for the evening. But it was his opponent, Jeff Juden, who stole the show. Juden pitched a complete game.
