Road to the Cup

Pittsburgh Penguins v Philadelphia Flyers,

January 15, 1991
The Spectrum, Section 21 Row 6

I had a cluster of Pens tickets during this time. Not complaining, that was when Mario Lemieux was in his prime. The Penguins would go onto win thier first of two back to back Stanley Cups this season.

This game was like watching pond hockey. The Flyers peppered Pittsburgh's Tom Barrasso with 17 shots in the 1st period. Pete Peters got the start for the Flyers.

The Flyers controlled the scoring in the opening period. Dale Kushner and Kjell Samuelsson each had one goal and Rick Tocchett scored two, to put the home team up 4-0 in the 1st.

The 2nd period belonged to Pittsburgh. The Pens put up the next 3 goals of the game. Bob Errey, Phil Bourque and Paul Coffey scored goals to bring the visitors within one goal. The Flyers Mike Ricci (who the Flyers chose ahead of Jaromir Jagr in the draft) scored in the 2nd.

The Penguins Gary Roberts scored in the 3rd but that was the end of the Penquins comeback bid.

17,382 were on hand to watch the Flyers win 5-4.
