Harvard beats Penn in the mile relay for the first championship before 5,000 fans. That was in 1894.
Jeff Hollobaugh from Track & Field News reported, “The gods of relay racing smiled upon Franklin Field for the 100th running of the Penn Relay Carnival. The sunshine was so splendid that the all-time attendance record (from ‘58) was trampled by 43,830 onlookers on Saturday.”
