A college buddy had a brother playing for Navy at the time. The morning of the game he called to ask if I wanted to ride with his parents to the game. At the time I had no idea who Navy was playing or that their opponent was #1 in the nation.
Being the Midshipman were 3-5-1 at the time and coming off a 29-0 loss to Syracuse the week before, no one saw an upset coming. Still, the stadium was packed with optimism.
The Navy website timeline of history states: Navy defeats top ranked South Carolina, 38-21, in one of the biggest upsets ever for the Mids, marking only the third time Navy has beaten an opponent ranked this high.
